Today’s guide is designed to help you if you receive an error message regarding troubleshooting your magneto ignition system. The voltage in front of the solenoids is quite high, around 20,000 volts if the spark plug is not used. The high voltage just stacks up in space. The mismatch will increase as the wire melts further, and soon every adjacent turn will be broken and the coil will eventually fail.
Many small motors use magneto to generate electricity and sparks. Often a large permanent magnet is built into the flywheel in such planes. Acting like a flywheel, the magnet spins next to the bare copper transformer, creating a current that ignites the spark plug and ignites the gasoline. The transformer is that special magneto. Magnets are most commonly used in small outboard motors. They are undoubtedly common on older motorcycles as well.

Remove the flywheel cover. There are usually three screws on the box for this, but some mid 1970s engines have four screws.
Find the type of magneto. This is the only oneThis is the part where most of the copper windings are exposed. It connects directly to the spark plug connector via a rubber boot. Remove the rubberized housing from the spark plug.
Set the multimeter to work with resistance, or just use an ohmmeter. Manually set the dial or counter knob to the K 45 range. Do not use the automatic range as it will not be reliable with a suitable magneto.
Touch one tip of the dipstick to the engine block and the other to the metal clip inside the rubberized housing that is usually attached to the spark plug. Values in excess of thousands of ohms or kΩ are given. Good reading – 3 to 15k. A higher value indicates a bad connection.
If you get readings above 15K ohms, check the high voltage wire connections to the existing coil and spark plug. After making sure the connections are clean and not blocked, try again.
Replace the magneto when the meter shows “OL”. This indicates an internal short circuit in the magneto.
How do I know if my magneto is bad?
Grasp the plastic handle of the screwdriver and bring the metal part of the screwdriver to the metal part of the motor. Be careful not to touch it. Have someone else start the mower. If you can’t imagine a spark between the screwdriver and the motor, the magneto may be faulty.

How do you tell if a magneto is working?
Most truck parts stores have spark testers that make testing easy. Essentially, the spark tester looks like a real spark plug with a large alligator clip. Connect the device to the plug wire and ground the minimizer. If the tractor has been turned, the tester flashes when there are enough sparks.
